The South Island Kingfish
The Kingfish is New Zealand's most coveted saltwater species for fly fisherman. We sight fish for them on the flats, wading in waist deep water using 8 to 10 weight rods. While they tend to be easy to spot, catching them is hard! They're notorious for refusing flies, especially if presented poorly. Larger kingfish fight hard and will often break rods, reels and line. Landing one of these beautiful fish is an amazing experience.
It's highly recommended that anglers come with prior saltwater fly fishing experience before booking.
We walk up to 5 km per day in search of these fish. Therefore, a reasonable amount of fitness is required.
The Weather
Golden Bay is often beautiful in the late summer and the water is usually warm. However, if the wind is on shore or it's raining heavily, the flats become unfishable. In this case, we turn to alternative plans.
There are some trout fishing opportunities around. While Golden Bay doesn't have as many trout as other parts of the South Island, the rivers are some of the prettiest on the island.
There's plenty of non-fishing activities in the area that are well worth the trip out to Collingwood.
