Here's a look at how we dress for a day on the river in New Zealand...
If you would like to rent gear such as boots, skins etc, we can arrange this through Southern Latitude Guiding
Boots: First, NO FELT! If you try to bring felt soles into NZ, it'll likely be seized by bio-security. Second, Avoid studs. The noise of studs on rocks can spook brown trout.
Top choice: Patagonia Foot Tractor. Why? They'll keep on fixing them.
Wet wading socks: I wear a thin wool sock under neoprene wet wading socks.
Top choice: Backcountryskinz Z-Drainz
Neoprene leggings: This is a game changer when it comes to wet wading. The 1 mm neoprene legging keeps your lower half at a great temperature all day. Further, it handles bush bashing very well!
Top choice: 1mm stealth black Backcountry Skinz
Shorts: Women can pull off just wearing skinz as leggings. But, men look a bit silly without a pair of shorts. Plus, pockets are helpful.
Top choice: Hunters Element Spur Shorts
Fishing Shirt: Due to a hole in the O-Zone layer, sunburn is a big deal in NZ. Add sandflies to the mix and you'll leave the short sleeves at home. Also, avoid bright colors. We're hunting trout. And, stealth is key.
Top choice: Orvis DriCast Hoodie
Warm Layer: Just about anything goes here. Just avoid light colors and keep with something that stays warm even when wet.
Top choice: Hunters Element Zenith Top
Rain Jacket: Don't leave this at home. It rains a lot in New Zealand!
Top choice: Simms G3 Guide Jacket
Sunglasses: Finding fish is half the battle. I prefer low light lenses that works in sun and shade.
Top choice: Smith Guides Choice Low Light Yellow
Hat: I have some olive colored and camo hats with by logo for sale. Message me for details.
